Planning guide ยท 26 October 2026
Plan a useful mobile application before building screens
A mobile application is a product with ongoing responsibilities. A short written plan is more useful than a long list of fashionable features.
1. Define the users and the jobs
- Name each user type: customer, staff, manager or administrator. For each one, write down the three actions that must work reliably.
- Choose which actions require login and whether guests should be able to use any features without an account.
2. Separate the first release from future ideas
- Group features into essential, later and optional. Describe the minimum complete journey from opening the app to completing its main task.
- If orders, bookings or payments are needed, specify what happens on partial failure and how the user can recover.
3. Decide what happens without internet
- Should the app display saved information, capture work offline, queue changes or stop with a clear message?
- If synchronisation exists, define conflict rules, retry limits and a user-visible status. Do not promise offline support without testing it.
4. Confirm ownership and running costs
- Record who owns the developer accounts, app listing, domain, API keys, push messaging, data storage and source code.
- Allow separately for app-store programme fees where applicable, devices, maintenance, hosting, security updates and third-party licensing.
5. Test the real customer journey
- Test on the minimum supported Android and iOS versions, slower networks and typical device sizes.
- Verify accessibility, permissions, error messages, data removal, crash recovery and release rollback before distribution.
6. Plan maintenance after launch
- Choose who responds to bug reports, operating-system changes, security advisories and service outages.
- Decide how releases are approved, how changes are measured and what evidence would justify adding new features.
Questions to ask before committing
Should I develop Android and iOS simultaneously?
That depends on the actual users and launch budget. A shared codebase can help, but platform-specific testing and store responsibilities remain.
Is app publication part of development cost?
Not automatically. Ask for a written distinction between development, store-account fees, hosting, integration and post-launch maintenance.
